Spreading Joy — The Show After The Show (Don’t Ignore The Staff!)
The other day, I had the pleasure of entertaining at an upscale private party for a 50th birthday. The atmosphere was vibrant, the guests were lively, and I performed a one-hour show that left everyone amazed. But sometimes, memorable moments also happen offstage.
As I wrapped up my performance and was getting ready to leave, I noticed the staff. They had caught glimpses of the show from the back-of-house, but their duties kept them from fully enjoying it. They were downstairs, preparing for the guests who would soon come down to dance the night away. As I walked past them, they called out, "Can we see something?"
I always enjoy entertaining the staff after my work is done. It reminds me of my time working as a waiter in a private club when I was younger. I know firsthand how hard they work to make events like these seamless and special. So, I happily obliged. I always do.
I read a couple of their minds, and the reactions were priceless. One woman was particularly memorable. I asked her to think of anyone in her life. I sensed that she was thinking about someone important to her, and then it came to me – her son. I asked her to focus and then I blurted out his name, "RAYMOND!" Her eyes widened, and she exclaimed, "I'm gonna die right now!" The staff erupted in cheers, screams and laughter, creating an impromptu celebration of their own.
Before I knew it, they were all asking for my business cards, eager to recommend me for future events at this upscale venue. It was a special moment, and a testament to the power of human connection and spreading joy.
Never treat the staff like an afterthought. Spreading joy doesn't deplete you of your own happiness; it only amplifies it. By taking a few moments to engage with them, I left not only the guests (some of whom witnessed this scene) but also the hardworking staff with a memorable experience. And in return, they gifted me with their genuine appreciation. I made their night, and that felt good.
Until next time, remember to spread joy wherever you go. Joy is a happiness amplifier.
